Kurzfassung
The newly developed functionally graded materials, which are manufactured and investigated in the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre TRR 30, pose great challenges to the machining process due to the combination of different material properties within one workpiece. During the machining of the thermo-mechanically treated workpieces featuring different hardness values in different workpiece zones, it was observed that surface roughness and tool wear depend on the process, the cutting tool geometry and material, the material properties of the workpiece zones, and the machining parameter values. To develop a suitable process design and strategies for efficient machining and to analyze the observed effects, experimental investigations were carried out combined with finite element analysis simulations. Empirical modeling and multi-objective optimization was employed to find Pareto-optimal parameter values for the turning process of functionally graded steel workpieces.
